Democratic Memory Law
This law aims to recognize those who suffered persecution or violence for political, ideological, thought or opinion reasons, religious conscience or belief, sexual orientation and identity, during the period between the coup d'état, the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship until the promulgation of the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
Who is eligible for this law?
Those born outside of Spain, descendants of originally Spanish parents, mothers or grandparents, including those who, due to political, ideological or religious exile, lost or renounced their Spanish nationality.
Sons and daughters born outside Spain to Spanish women who lost their citizenship through marriage to foreigners before the 1978 Constitution came into force.
Adult descendants of Spaniards who obtained their nationality of origin through the right of option according to this Law or the seventh additional provision of Law 52/2007, of December 26.

Necessary documentation
- Valid Passport.
- Birth Certificate of the Interested Party, legalized or apostilled.
- Birth Certificate of the Parent.
- Birth Certificate of the applicant's Spanish grandfather or grandmother.
- Documents proving the grandfather/grandmother's exile status, including at least a document with the date of departure from Spain.
